In the pilot episode, the main character Dexter is introduced and told how he becomes a serial killer. The episode opens with a gruesome murder. Later, Dexter, who also works as a forensic scientist for the police, has to find a murderer who always bleeds out his corpses and then leaves them in pieces. He is helped by his sister Deb, who is also an enthusiastic police officer.
